An Intimate Relationship
Prayer has been called “the breath of the soul”. It is personal and intimate; it expresses our deepest thoughts and feelings, our needs and our desires. It connects us with One who knows us completely, cares for us deeply and who longs to support and encourage us through this troubled world. Through prayer we communicate supernaturally with our Creator using our own words and emotions.
Simple
Prayer is an attitude of our hearts. It happens whether we have the words to express ourselves or not.
“God speaks in the silence of the heart. Listening is the beginning of prayer.” ~ Mother Teresa
“God can pick sense out of a confused prayer.” ~ Richard Sibbes
More than meditation
“Prayer is more than meditation. In meditation, the source of strength is one’s self. When one prays, he goes to a source of strength greater than his own.” ~ Anne Louise Germaine de Staël-Holstein
“Prayer is exhaling the spirit of man and inhaling the spirit of God.” ~ Edwin Keith
“Prayer is communication with the Divine. It can be whispered or chanted or written or expressed in the work you do. However it is expressed, it is never in vain.” ~ Donna Wilk Cardillo
A Cry from the Heart
“Prayer requires more of the heart than of the tongue.” ~ Adam Clarke
“True prayer is the pouring out of the heart to God;” ~ Roger Williams
“Prayer and helplessness are inseparable. Only he who is helpless can truly pray.” ~ O. Hallesby.
A Determination to Persevere
Prayer may be simple, but isn’t always easy. Life is busy. Having the determination to pray often involves sacrifice … of our time and our competing desires. Sometimes our situation is so serious that persevering in prayer is the only answer.
“I have been driven many times to my knees by the overwhelming conviction that I had nowhere else to go.” ~ Abraham Lincoln
Widened Horizons
“We must move from asking God to take care of the things that are breaking our hearts, to praying about the things that are breaking His heart.” ~ Margaret Gibb
“For me, prayer is an aspiration of the heart, it is a simple glance directed to heaven, it is a cry of gratitude and love in the midst of trial as well as joy; finally it is something great, supernatural, which expands my soul and unites me to Jesus.” ~ Therese of Lisieux
