A New You?

Already, we’re ten days into the first month of 2024; Christmas has gone, next stop: Valentine’s Day. As the saying goes, “Time waits for no man!” I always look forward to the start of a new year. For me it’s a fresh start, and a new opportunity to enjoy the freshness of spring, the summer warmth and the colours of autumn. (Of course, we can’t ignore the fact that the world faces an uncertain future at the moment, but on a personal level new year can be a time to look ahead with a fresh sense of purpose.)

But maybe instead, we’re looking back at our past failures and mistakes, and despair of ever seeing a real change in who we are or in the circumstances around us. In the BBC TV series, ‘The Repair Shop’, three or four beloved items are brought into the workshop by their owners, each in a state of disrepair - i.e. the items, not the owners! Often the task of restoration seems immense, but at the end of the programme, the owner is presented with their object looking brand new and in full working order, just as they remember it!

On one occasion a lady brought in an early Victorian portrait of a young Frenchman, which was, in her own words, "fit for the bin". It was so dirty that you could barely make out the face; the canvas was torn in several places, and the frame was missing. When the work had been completed however, the result was astonishing - it was as if the painting had come alive! The man’s face glowed with life, his grey eyes gazing out of the painting. The holes in the canvas had disappeared, and the whole portrait was surrounded by an elegant gold frame. On her return to the workshop to collect the painting, it was as if the lady received her ancestor, because that’s who he was, back from the dead.

That’s all very well for inanimate objects, but how do you fix who you are? Maybe there is someone reading this post today, who regrets the past and yearns for a new start in life, even for a whole new you? There is really only one person, who can make us new on the inside, who can wash away the past and give us a whole new start, and that is Jesus. Nothing and no one else can do it; not religion, not good works, not philosophy; only Jesus. Listen to His words:

“I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean. I will cleanse you from all your uncleanness and your idols. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will take away your stubborn heart of stone and give you an obedient heart.”
Ezekiel 36:25-26

“Thank you God for today, a day of new beginnings and a fresh start. I no longer hold onto my past, I give it to you. Please come into my life; wash me clean, forgive me and make me new.”
