“Where Have All the Flowers Gone?” is a hauntingly beautiful, circular folk song, with a simple melody from the early 1960’s. Written by Pete Seeger and added to by Joe Hickerson, it was made popular by ‘Peter, Paul and Mary’, and also by Marlene Dietrich. It’s a once heard, never forgotten sort of song. In 2010, it was named by the New Statesman magazine as one of the “Top 20 Political Songs”.
I was instantly reminded of the song, when my attention was drawn to a new video this week, which commemorates a sad milestone in the history of the UK. The video called, “Who would The Ten Million be today?” (2mins 40 secs.), could just as easily have been entitled, “Where Have All the People Gone?”.
