Just off the coast of South-West Florida a huddle of mysterious white domes stand precariously on stilts, with seawater lapping gently below. Looking like something out of Star Trek or Doctor Who, they actually have a more down to earth explanation. They were built in 1980 as a futuristic, fully equipped, holiday home by Bob Lee, a retired oil producer, on a sandy strip of land surrounded by palm trees.

Bob, who not only owned, but also designed the solar powered, dome home, was a gifted inventor, well-loved and, in many ways, ahead of his time. He originally built the home some distance from the beach, but it was the sandy ground that was sadly the home’s undoing. In 2005 Hurricane Wilma washed away part of the coastline, including the sand beneath the home, eventually leaving the abandoned domes stranded above the waves, hundreds of feet from the shore.

The history of this unusual building is reminiscent of a story which Jesus told 2,000 years ago, about two men who each built a house; one built on rock, the other on sand. A storm came and the house built on rock survived, but the one built on sand collapsed in spectacular fashion.

Jesus likened both of the men in the story to those who listened to what He had to say. The man, who built his house on the rock, however, was like someone who not only listened to His Creator, but who also put His words into practice. In the same way, people all over the world have found a new peace, a new purpose, a new source of strength through following the words of Jesus.

And it’s good to remember that when the storms of life come, we not only have the words of Jesus to give us hope and guide us in our decisions, but we have a loving Father who longs to help us through those difficult times. If we want to build our life on a firm footing, rather than waiting for the storm to hit, the time to start listening and building is now.
